Evolution

I really enjoyed this project, the theme was very fascinating and the more I investigated it, the more self-reflection I had and learnt about myself.

The theme that I chose for this project was introspection. I wanted to explore this theme because I’m fascinated by self-reflection and the view of the conscience.

I developed my ideas by using various reflections and research to support my ideas. During this project, research was a huge part of the development. So, I had to collect two relevant artists that relate to the theme well. The artists that I used to inform my work was Lee Haejung and Barbara Walker. Lee Haejung demonstrates self – observation perfectly in her work. As an artist, I really respect her appreciation for spirituality. As a viewer, you really witness the internal struggle Lee has through her work; just by the soul that is captured through the eyes of the subject matter. Another artist that informed my work, was Barbara Walker. Her artwork beautifully illustrates soul and humanity. Her work really eases my emotion. To also help compose my work, I researched surrealism. I wanted to use surrealism because it showcases the comradery between reality and the unconscious state which I want to incorporate into my final piece.

Another thing that supported my development was the discussions I had. I had a quite interesting discussion with my mum. She’s a Christian, so her input on introspection was helpful.

To strengthen my project outcomes, I made a lot of practical work. This uplifted my work because it allowed me to experiment with different mediums. After experimenting , I came to the conclusion that tonal would be the best .

It was very easy to respond to the theme in a personal way, seeing as this theme was about self-observation. The theme led me to a lot of self-discoveries because of how much I observed of external and internal state. Another reason this was personal is because it is a celebration of my voice.

I considered social responsibility in my work, by talking about spirituality and how I responded to them in my artwork. The ethical design that I considered with my work was not copyrighted. All my work is original and not plagiarised. A self-portrait. It is also a celebration of diversity.  My work communicates the ideas that I intended because it is a celebration of introspection by giving an insight into my soul and consciousness.

First-hand observational drawings were very imperative with my work, seeing as my final piece was a self-portrait. Because of this fact, the subject matter of my works was myself. The main aim of my drawings, was the focus of different facial features and areas of my face. These works were either presented through tonal drawings or paint or lino print. Each observation allowing me insight into my exterior.

To help with my self portrait photography really helped because it captured different angles of my face.

I researched various materials, techniques and processes to help refine my work. The materials I researched was different mediums to use. At first, I experimented with acrylic paint, the positive that I saw when using this medium was how much fun it was but unfortunately, because I am so detail oriented, I struggled with using acrylic. After that I trailed with lino print, tonal drawings, dye and pen.

The most successful elements of my work, were the eyes .I really like how they came out and how scarcely scattered they are .Adding them really pulled the piece together!

If I did the outcome again, next time I would be way more experimental with the background. I don’t know what it is, but it feels like something is missing from the final piece. I think adding some colour or another element would resolve this.

One thing that happened expectedly with the outcome was that after I finished the piece, the background appeared to be quite dirty due to the pencil smudges and marks. To resolve this problem, I cute out the drawings and collaged them onto a A3 paper. It actually turned out better then before because it allowed me to collage the piece and experiment with different ways to display it across the paper.

I believe my work is dynamic, because of the surrealism demonstrated in it.

This allowed me to use my materials creatively

I applied SCARED technique by adding Collage, Photoshop to alter scale and meaning. I also added symbols.
